During
World War II, on the eight square miles of hell known
as Iwo Jima, one U.S. Marine was struck down every 20
seconds, all day long.
On
the morning of February 19, 1945, PFC Charles Waterhouse---in
the company of other members of the assault demolition
teams of C Company 5th EngrBn---landed on the extreme
left flank of Green Beach, in the shadow of Mount Suribachi.
Early on in the battle for those ashen shores, Waterhouse
became a statistic. The gunshot wound to his shoulder
severed two nerves and nicked his artery, resulting
in circulatory problems and loss of feeling in three
and a half fingers. Fortunately, the right hand, his
drawing hand, remained untouched.
